Gleneagles
Bounded by the wild glens of Perthshire, Gleneagles promises one of the most scenic inland games of golf in Scotland. It is home to three revered courses, the King’s Course, Queen’s Course, and the PGA Centenary Course. Designed by James Braid in 1919, King’s was the first course established at Gleneagles. While the heather and heathland of the course itself blend into the glens beyond, the course itself stands out as a leading example of the superiority of Scottish golf. However, no course is as fair as the Gleneagles Queen who enchants players with her woodlands, heaths, ridges, lochans, and lush greens. Don’t be fooled though, for she may appear gentle, but looks can be deceiving.
Although King’s was Gleneagles’ original championship course, it was soon overthrown by the venerable PGA Centenary Course which was developed by none other than 18-time major winner Jack Nicklaus. Since its opening in 1993, The PGA Centenary has had the honour of hosting the Ryder and Solheim Cup on multiple occasions. From the bunkers of the Gowden Beastie to the hollows of Sleekit Howe and the hill of sorrow at Carn Mairg, the course is packed with exciting twists and tricksfor amateurs and pros alike. Even so, many believe King’s remains the king of Scottish inland courses. Whichever course you choose to play, though, Gleneagles will undoubtedly be a highlight of your St Andrews and Fife itinerary.
